Did you know that the shampoo you use was probably forced down the throat of a cat, or maybe even a dog?
Each year, millions of animals are used to test how safe and effective products, such as cosmetics, medicines, detergents, are. They are first tested on these innocent animals and then marked safe for use by humans.
All around the world, helpless and defenseless animals are being operated for different types of experiments. However, while conducting these experiments, we forget that like us, animals can also feel pain and are filled with fear. They can’t talk, write books or drive cars, but neither can some humans do so. Does this mean, they should be used for experiments?
Regardless of the intelligence and the abilities that the animals possess, their life still has value. Some of these animals are subjected to pain in tests of the skin or eye irritancy, while others are killed while establishing the lethal dose of chemical products.
Some small animals share a shoe box sized cage with at least a few other small animals. That’s no way to live. Imagine stuffing eight human beings into a small-sized bedroom. Where are you all going to sleep or get dressed? Not easy, right?
Animals are held down by metal bands or locked in small cages with a hole cut out for the animal’s head to be trapped into so that they cannot move around and be a hassle while being tested on. Isn’t it similar to spending life in imprisonment by a human?
Another harsh thing that the handlers do is taking out the vocal chords of a dog. This is done in order to prevent them from disturbing the lab workers.
The experimenters will discard the animal after being tested on or will use the animal again for further testing until they are dead or useless.Scientists use animals for testing products to make human life better, right? That’s what even I thought.
Well, many experiments that were approved to be available to human beings after successful animal testing, have later been recalled for safety issues or harmful side effects. So is animal testing really reliable?
If products have to be withdrawn from stores and human use, is it not clear that this brutality is of no use? Animals too have a right to live, and cannot be tested based on human will.
We are so selfish that we do not give any value to the poor animal’s lives. We only see where and how we can benefit from them, even if it means to test a product on them till they die.
Animal testing is cruelty more than science. It is one way to contribute to the extinction of animal species, by making them endangered. It should be banned all around the world, for it can save our much valuable fauna.
